A retirement community is a term that is used to call a variety of housing for retirees and seniors. It is especially developed and equipped for people who no longer work or for those over a certain age. Retirement communities differ from retirement homes, which are single buildings or small complex where there is no specific areas for people to socialize. There are many retirement communities that have special facilities to serve the needs and wants of retirees, such as club houses, golf courses, and on-site medical facilities. Others are Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities or NORC, which become retirement oriented due to market forces rather than design.

Right now retirement communities are “hot.”

When there is a lot of interest in a subject, trying to predict the trends becomes important also. No one knows exactly what will happen in the future, however. It is fun to make predictions. Predictions should be more than wild guesses or pure intuition. Real estate trends can be based on demographics and money flow or something as simple as watching the traffic flow on my website about retirement communities for over age 55.

My website has categories for the areas of the United States. How much traffic flows to those states tells me something. The traffic can, in turn, be affected by something like

the weather or a news story, so it changes minutely and temporarily. But over time, certain trends are strong. For instance, the state that consistently gets the most traffic is Florida. This tells me that a lot of people are interested in retiring to Florida and that is a consistent trend that has not changed over many years. It appears right now that this will continue to be so, although it could change at any time.

Ten years ago, computer literacy was an issue with older Americans. My father was insistent that one of those machines would never be seen near his desk. So we bought him one for Christmas and let the instruction manual drag him in. Now he paints with it.

It seems that resistance to computers is largely a thing of the past among most of us these days. They are a part of everyone’s life, and grandparents are no exception. The ease and simplicity of email has spread computer use through all generations. Instant communication with children and grandchildren who are far away have brought millions of older Americans online and having arrived there, they have learned about the remarkable

resources on the Internet.
